[00:00] In this episode, Igor is joined by Tom Wang to talk about the dark side of entrepreneurship as he shares his inspiring journey and his proven system for launching products on Amazon in his book, The Simple Path To Amazon Wealth.

[02:48] Tom Shares His Backstory:

  • I was born and raised in China and came to Canada at the age of 10.

  • In China, we were a middle-class family. We weren’t rich by any means and then when we came to Canada, we were very poor.

  • I was like, bullied, I felt poor, and I felt restricted. And I compared my experience, the first couple of years in Canada, with my experience in China.

  • It was very painful for them to go through the first few years in Canada. I had all these side hustles or gigs just to earn a little bit of extra money. And then that’s where my entrepreneurial drive came.

  • Then I went to university and flunked out of three universities. I wasn’t really focused on school, I just wanted to make money.

[05:12] Tom Wang Launches His Skincare Brand:

  • I started a skincare brand in 2017 when I was working a nine-to-five job making sales online.

  • It did $100,000 in sales again, now profitable in year two with that I 1.6 million 3.2 million, then four something million, and then sold the brand in December 2020.

[06:25] The Testing COVID-19 Times:

  • 2020 was a very stressful year because we were trying to sell the business the entire year.

  • I also had other businesses going on, I have an online training program, and I had other businesses that I was dabbling in other projects.

  • One day in July 2021, I woke up and everything just seemed off. It seemed like the world didn’t seem real.

  • My brain just wasn’t processing properly. And I’ve been like that ever since. I’ve gotten a lot better over the past six months, but I still have symptoms. And I haven’t felt “normal” since that day.

  • I just threw money at doctors, and consultants, I traveled everywhere in the world, trying to figure out what this was, and no one can figure it out. Everybody gave me a different diagnosis.

  • And then the anxiety turned into depression. Because I felt helpless. I felt like this was gonna be the rest of my life. I felt like no one could help me, I felt stuck.

  • The one thing I believed in was, if my mind can get me there, my mind can also get me out of there. I started seeking help for more of a mindset thing.

  • I accepted that I had this and I also surrendered to the fact that like, whatever this is just take me on this journey. And like if I die tomorrow, I die tomorrow.

[08:37] The Olympic Blues:

  • There’s a term called Olympic blues, which means a lot of the Olympians who go to the Olympics.

  • This only happens to the people that win gold medals. It doesn’t happen to people that win silver or bronze. Because the people that win gold, they’re like, “Okay, what now.”

  • Same as people that go to the moon, people that go space astronauts, who come back they are likely to experience these depressing symptoms.

  • The reason why is that we put so much weight on ourselves in terms of achieving success. And we think in our mind that once we achieve success, once we achieve 100 million dollars, everything else will be okay.

[26:05] The Practice Of Faith In Business:

  • If you believe in God, you’re giving your intention to the world. And sometimes God will test you.

  • I’ve developed this practice of faith, whatever happens in my life, I always say, this is for the greater good. A year down the road, five years down the road, this is actually an amazing event that happened to you.

[27:49] Building Momentum:

  • I call it building momentum. The body motion stays in motion sort of thing.

  • You need to have this sort of surrender mindset in a way where if something bad happens for you, if you need to vent, if you need to go break some dishes, or, you know, punch a bag, actually do have a punching bag over there. You do it, and you get through the whole initial spike of emotions as fast as you can.

  • Then you have to arrive at inner peace and acceptance that this is happening.

[30:41] How To Learn And Grow?

  • You have to go through this yourself, you have to burn your hand on the stove, yourself to truly grasp the lesson.

  • You learn better by going through an experience than you do by reading a book.

[34:22] What is Success?

  • Until you’ve experienced having somewhat of an abundance of cash flow, where your immediate money problems have been solved, and you have saved some money.

  • To live at just the cost of housing alone is just insane.

  • All of a sudden the things you buy take control over you. And they add this level of complexity to your life that you don’t like, then you end up sort of taking a step back, stripping yourself of these possessions, and finding some bliss simplicity.

  • And this freedom is a lot more important, a lot more fulfilling than owning a supercar or owning a nice watch or, or a boat or whatnot.
