[00:20] In this episode, Igor challenges the notion that one must choose between health and wealth, sharing personal anecdotes and insights to demonstrate that it’s possible to lead a life of financial success, well-being, and happiness simultaneously.
[02:00] A Party, a Debate, and Differing Views on Money:
- I recall attending a birthday party for my friend, Jana, who happens to be a Russian living in Israel. At this gathering, I met another guest named Dima. Dima, at the time, was employed by Intel, which, in Israel, equates to a rather lucrative job for an engineer, fetching around $7,000 monthly. This was indeed good money in Israel, although the economic landscape may have shifted since then.
- I had already achieved my first million dollars without a traditional job. To me, a ‘job’ was synonymous with low-paying entry-level positions where employees often felt undervalued.
- Dima and I found ourselves engaged in a passionate debate about money and the mindset surrounding it. This topic happens to be one of my personal favorites – how people perceive money, what it means to them, and how they define success. Does it include a million dollars? Does it entail freedom?
[03:37] Challenging the ‘Health vs. Wealth’ Dilemma:
- Our conversation grew quite heated, as it became evident that Dima and I were on opposing ends of the spectrum. Dima uttered something that, while perhaps misguided, reflected a common belief: ‘I’d rather be healthy than rich.’
- Essentially, this statement implies that one has to choose between health and wealth. It’s akin to saying, ‘I’d rather be old and married than rich,’ or ‘I’d rather be a good parent than rich.’ This notion implies that opting for wealth comes at the expense of other essential aspects of life.
- I couldn’t help but burst into laughter. My response was simple – why should you have to choose? Why can’t you be healthy, wealthy, happily married, a great parent, and even pursue personal passions and projects simultaneously?
[04:38] The Diverse Paths to Wealth:
- There’s no one-size-fits-all formula for achieving wealth. Some experience divorces, much like Elon Musk, a man I deeply respect despite his multiple marriages and numerous children. Yet, he efficiently manages multiple companies, as evidenced by his recent acquisition of Twitter.
- Money, in many cases, is the catalyst for marital strife. However, there are numerous rich, healthy, and content individuals who manage to avoid divorce. These stories don’t make headlines because, frankly, they’re seen as ‘boring.’
- Consider ‘The Millionaire Next Door,’ a book that unveils the lives of ordinary, wealthy Americans with a net worth of around $4 million. They lead unremarkable lives, operating small businesses, cherishing their families, avoiding divorce, and driving practical cars rather than flashy Ferraris. Theirs is a safe, predictable existence.
- The point I aim to convey is that you can be wealthy, healthy, and happy, all simultaneously. It’s a matter of choice.
