How I Quit My Last Job

I basically had a couple of jobs, I was doing part time security and full time I was at work at this computer store called Neuron Computers. It was one of the two computer stores in town. The town was really small, like a hick town, so maybe 20,000 people. So everyone knows everybody, people gossip about each other, right? So I was working in the store, and I was doing a pretty good job. Like I wasn’t great at selling, but I understood computer parts. And you know, when people came in for the most part, you know, people who came in were older. You know, I knew how to explain what a webcam is to a 55 year old guy who wanted to call his family back in Kazakhstan or something, right? Like, they would bring me their computers and I would install software like drivers and things like that.

I think I was doing a pretty good job because the sales were definitely up. And then one day I was with a customer, and the phone. the store phone is ringing off the hook. And I’m like with the customer because I want to show the customer that like I want to, you know, the customer is my priority, right? And the phone just keeps ringing and keeps ringing and keeps ringing. And I’m just you know what, one second, I just pick up the phone like Yes. And it’s the owner, his name is Mickey and Mickey is yelling at me be like, Why aren’t you picking up the phone? And I’m like, well, because I’m with a customer. He says I don’t care if you’re with a customer or with the President, you know, if I’m calling you should pick up the phone. And I said Mickey let me finish with the customer. I’ll call you back.

Okay. So like, I finished with a customer, I made the sale, and I called him back and he just kept yelling at me and yelling at me and yelling at me. And he just really just treats me like I’m some kind of an idiot. And I’ve never liked that about having a job. All of my bosses treated me like an idiot, even though I always considered myself to be a very intelligent guy. In fact, one of my, in my hierarchy of values, you know, intellect and intelligence, whether it’s emotional intelligence, or intellectual intelligence, like I valued very highly about myself, like my self image is actually based on the fact that I’m a smart guy, it’s more about my brains than it is about anything else.

So you know, when somebody treats me like an idiot, or talks down to me, or if anything makes me feel stupid, I’m like, I’m very resistant to that. So that’s how I felt at that moment. And you know, this guy, Mickey could really belittle people, you know, he had that skill set, I guess. So I really, I just, I didn’t want to take shit from him anymore. And that month, I had already made, I believe , $800 or something online. In fact, part of why I liked working in that store’s because there was a lot of downtime where no one would show up and I would just be on the computer then I could log into my Clickbank account, check my commissions, write an email on my AWeber account, etc. And I said, maybe this doesn’t work for me, I quit. And I quit that day. Now again, a very emotional decision because I’m not making enough money yet to go full time. I kind of need that job. So it was a crazy roller coaster from that point forward because I didn’t have a big stable source of income. I still kept my security job part time, but it was really only part time, only a couple days a week. So it wasn’t much. And I said okay, I got to double down on my business now.

And everyday I was paranoid, I was checking my commissions and accounts and my tracking, probably once every 10 seconds. I couldn’t really think of anything other than working on my business and was really scared. But you know, what’s really interesting is that it lasted for a while, even after I made my first 3000 a month, 5000 a month. And by the end of that year, like, by the end of the 12 months following that moment, I believe there was a month where I made $17 or $19,000 in a single month. So you understand this is roughly more than a year’s salary, probably more than a year and a half worth of salary at the time. So I made it in one month, and yet my brain was still trapped in that thinking pattern about oh, no, this all might end tomorrow, I might end up broke again. So definitely it was a roller coaster. But I think it had more to do with me having so much trauma over growing up poor and getting used to the idea that, you know, I’m just my family’s broke than anything else.

It had nothing to do with reality. At the same time. One might say that having that fear, you know, that fear of poverty, fear of mediocrity, that was always way more motivating to me than making any amount of money or any prestige that comes with making money. You know, like I just didn’t believe anymore, that a job could make me rich. I didn’t believe that a job could offer me the security that I wanted. I didn’t believe that a job could lead to a great life. And so there was like mentally I was fully committed, no matter what it took to build my business online.

And it was scary. But the prospect of going back to a day job was even scarier. So I think what kept me going was this idea. You know that I’m between a rock and a hard place. Yeah, but I better hustle and build my business because I knew it would be a temporary hard place, than go back to working a day job which is basically a dead end.
