Dealing with Unsupportive Partners

Most people don’t have a supportive spouse when it comes to business opportunities. Some spouses are more aggressive than others. Some actually use it as an excuse to break up the marriage. I remember back when I had my private coaching program. Back in the day, I closed the sale. A client who was a trucker who really couldn’t go on the road anymore. Like he was really tired. He was like, I think getting down to 60 years old. I mean, it was just very difficult for him at the time, there were some health issues. So, he needed something to do from home. And so, he paid I think four grand, which was half of the payment. And then the next day I got a message from him, basically saying that he came back from work, his wife left. And she texted him saying that he has to get a refund from me, or should divorce him.

Now, when something like that happens, I’m usually not wanting to hold on to the money because I know there’s going to be more clients and I didn’t like it wasn’t my primary source of income anyway. So, it was like, Okay, well, here’s your money back. I’m pretty sure they got divorced anyway, there’s no way four grand was enough to break up a marriage. But apparently it was like, the straw that broke the camel’s back, or a convenient excuse for the wife to finally say, oh, see, I knew it like this is what I’m talking about. But you see the challenge with attempting to build an online business or any business in a marriage. In an established marriage it is always going to be an unsupportive spouse, my brother went through this and I’m not. I’m actually very judgmental of my brother for that reason. Because at one point, I helped him build an E farming business that was bringing him about $6,000 US per month.

So, you understand, that’s about double of the usual pay that he would get from his job. When he worked full time. And he worked really hard. Then he still works like that. By the way, he still likes to wake up at 3am, go to the bakery and do everything. Now he also got another job in an airline. So, he didn’t leave the job at the bakery. So, he’s always like doing two jobs at least.

And so, at one point, he was making money in the day job and just working a couple of hours a day, he was also making more money from his economy business. And I told them, look, dude, if you want to scale this now, you need to put a little bit more time and effort into this and you have to get more serious and you need to, you know, get fired. Get rid of the job. You’re spending more time in that job and you’re making half the money. Just move on. And let me help you scale this. And the problem is his wife was against it.

She basically convinced him not to leave the day job. She basically felt that scaling the family business was the risky thing to do.

Even though it was like months and months and months after having the proof of concept of making a lot of money and that business actually paying for their vacation time and paying for the school and the paying for his son’s soccer practices, and the new PC, for his other son was a gamer. Right? She kind of couldn’t see that. But you found me risky.

And he listened to her. And about two months later, his farming business dwindled down and died.

So, the point I’m making is, if you’ve got a spouse who’s supporting you, and you actually do them doing this together, it’s amazing if that’s freaking awesome. I mean, Anastasia, I can’t say she was like, super supportive of what I was doing. But she was never in the way either. Like, it was, it was extremely rare for her to say something like, you shouldn’t do it. Or think again. Are you sure? You know, for the most part, she just did not get in the way. She let me do my thing. As long as I pay the bills, which most of the time I did.

But although she was the main provider in the family until I succeeded in farming, which is something that my dad used to always look ashamed of. He never missed the chance ever, like me, I never let your mother pay the bills. And then here I am, like, mooching money off of my girlfriend, who isn’t even my wife at the time. But yeah, but she never got in the way. So, looking back, I’m grateful. Because if she were to criticize me at the time, and tell me that I’m wrong, that I’m wasting my time, I would probably have dropped it and settled for a job. I think so maybe not, maybe I would rebel against her, get rid of her, you know, and go build my business without her. But I’m happy that she never got in the way that we built it together.

That, you know, she’s helping on the business a lot, obviously, you know, she manages pretty much all the finances. And I figured I figured that’s the right thing to do. You know, I’ll make the money if you manage it. I’m happy with that. I’m terrible at spending and managing my money and investing. So yeah, basically where I was going with this if you guys are doing it together, it’s awesome. Like I’m really happy for you.
