At some point, I bought into the idea that whoever has an email list and emails that list every day is going to be making money, regardless of whatever the next fad is, whether it’s TikTok or whatever.

So I was just convinced, meaning that I, you know, I was convinced that emailing my list and growing my list every day is going to result in me making money. So having, like, this ridiculous desire to make money, knowing that money is not only going to solve a lot of my problems with my family’s problems, because, remember, I grew up poor, but also money was a social filter that would kind of take me out of the quote, unquote, the Israeli ghetto, where I really I didn’t see myself staying like I just couldn’t see myself staying in that environment anymore. There was too much danger. There was too much crime. I don’t recall if I told the story about, you know, me getting into a fight at my workplace with a few customers who were obviously, you know, criminals, and me actually getting blamed for it. Police started a file on me, but eventually discharged me, kind of basically saying that the file was wrongfully started and kind of letting me go, but never punishing the criminals.

I mean, it was just a day to day life that I knew that I didn’t want to live. My way out was money, and I knew I needed to make money. I was desperate to make money. I would, I mean, I would do anything that I knew would work long term and email was that. So, having that incredible desire to make money, it wasn’t hard for me to, quote, unquote, make myself sit down and write some emails. It just wasn’t like I would just jump out of bed and want to go and try to take a stab at writing an email. What really helped me as far as being able to do it well and quickly learn how to do it was writing to templates. 

Meaning, you know, I read Dan Kennedy’s Ultimate Sales Letter book at one point, and what that book did. It’s not exactly the best copywriting book you’ll ever read. It’s really not like there’s better copywriting books pure copywriting, but it conveys one clear as day message, and that is that writing copy is basically building Legos, because copy consists of several components, headline, subheadline, opener, guarantee, PS, bullet points, you know, problem, agitate, solve, etc. Basically, there’s formulas in the same way that we learn Math in school. And there’s formulas A plus B square equals whatever. There’s formulas for copywriting. And that book is just a great introduction into copywriting formulas and turning what seems to be an art like this abstract art of putting some words on paper that make people want to send you money into a very concrete, formulaic thing. So as long as you follow the formulas, you know, oftentimes you do better than just getting by. Let’s put it this way, you don’t have to be world class, just have to know the formulas and once I read that and I already understood the importance of emails, I took that approach to email marketing, and I started looking for programs and courses and mentors who basically didn’t just teach email, but with any course they were selling, they were they were like.

Throw in swipe files. Now, a swipe file is a great concept for you guys to know, and it’s something you should be using every single day, and that is basically a collection of ideas and templates for crafting marketing messages. Now, specifically with email, you can have an email swipe file. It took me about 40 minutes or so, but I put together an email to the guy who writes my emails today. He crafts my sequence, etc, and he basically emailed me earlier today and he said, Hey, I need some more stories to write about. Like I need you to tell me, you know, give me some stories from your life that I can write emails about. So I sit down, and here I am with a blank slate. Okay? Which stories do I give them? So most people would literally be sitting there and be like, I don’t know. Maybe that’s for me to this story and having a hard time. What I’ve done is I keep the swipe file of what I call personal narrative stories, okay? And so I have it broken down, you know, to stories about my kids, stories about my parents, childhood trauma, you know, all kinds of stuff like that, right? Industry related stuff. And so I don’t really need to be thinking a lot. I just need to pull something from the swipe file right and go write about it. And usually the template for that would be to tell the story and then make a point.

Okay, so, so the way I got better was I started looking for, if you will, influencers, right, who were teaching that and who were offering swipe files, whether it’s like subject line swipe files, opening swipe files, PS, swipe files, and all of a sudden, maybe within a few months, I had like, a big folder on my computer with, like, dozens and dozens of swipe files from all kinds of people. And of course, I was already subscribing to other people’s emails, and I started to take it to the next level by saying, Can I turn this email that I received from Michael’s saying into a template? Let’s see. It starts with, did you ever wonder how to and then it’s like, you know, blah blah, blah, blah, blah, I wonder if that’s a template. Did you ever wonder how to lose weight? Did you ever wonder how to restore eyesight? Did you ever wonder how to, you know, get off insulin? Like, it seems to be a template, right?

Because once you kind of gain that vision, you can stop, you can’t really unsee it, if you will. And writing emails isn’t very difficult. When you don’t have to start from scratch. You just go pull up a formula, and you just fill in the blanks with whatever your target market wants to hear, and you get yourself an email. Now later, that was like in the first, you know, maybe year, but later I got a little bit more sophisticated, developed my own formulas, and, you know, I really enjoyed the process and strive for innovation, and that’s what, what happens when you specialize in something, meaning that there there’s many other things that that have to get done for me to run my online business, where I don’t really take a lot of time to go and create any special things that are my own. I’m totally happy to use other people’s things, but with email specifically, because I enjoyed it so much, I ended up specializing in it, and therefore developing my own methodologies too.
