What you want to be when you have a list is not somebody who provides helpful content. You want to be an authority. And the way to become an authority is not about providing helpful content. It’s more about being infotaining in your emails and talking about the experience that your customer is going through, is talking about the solutions, the problems that they’re going through, rather than providing helpful content. So think of it in terms of you don’t want to be like those articles on the internet, like on wikiHow, like, you know, for example, you know, steps to lower your internet bill in five steps with pictures, you know. Step one, find your bill. Step two, call the Internet company. Step three, tell them that you’re gonna leave unless they’re gonna offer you a discount, whatever. You know. What I mean, like, don’t this is dry content, dry, helpful content that all it does is just puts you in a bucket with other content creators and content providers to all they do is just create all this content for nothing.

If you notice the list builders that make the most money, their emails are not what you would call like you would call their emails full of helpful content. Their emails have more stories. They have more news announcements, but most importantly, they have lots and lots of offers and lots and lots of calls to action to buy the products and services they’re promoting. So, you know, the helpful content bit is really not, it’s not how you monetize your list. It might be how you monetize a website. If you’re optimizing the website for search. Let’s say I have a buddy, he’s a lawyer, and he helps businesses, so his website is full of helpful content, and what happens is somebody searches for a keyword, like how to start a company in Canada, or what is tax ID number in for a Canadian company, and then they land on the site that explains what that means.

However, immediately after, there’s a call to action that says, contact us and we’ll help you, you know, do whatever, like file your taxes or form an entity and so on and so forth, so but with an email list, they’re already there because they want to be notified of the next best and greatest thing to solve the problem or to achieve the outcome that they want to achieve. So if you study any of my emails, you’ll see that there’s very little helpful content there. There’s more personality in it than content. There’s more infotainment, there’s more metaphors and comparisons, there’s more pointing out mistakes, there’s more you know, kind of authoritatively discussing things.

So you almost want to look at the way Donald Trump talks, right? And that would be how you want to communicate. In other words, Donald Trump will not when he’s in front of an audience, especially during the election year, you won’t hear him going into detail about some bill, right? He’s not going to talk to you about Section eight. A Subsection C of the, you know, of some sort of, you know, Bill that he wants to pass. No, he’s going to talk in more, broader sense. He’s going to, you know, basically, yell at the audience about why the Democrats have ruined America now, to the same extent the Democratic candidate will talk about how, you know, the reason we don’t have enough jobs for everybody is because the Republicans did this and that. So in other words, like, that’s a little bit of blaming and finger pointing, but it’s also a technique.
