These days, people are just chasing information, like they’re hungry for stuffing their face with information. And with AI, it’s now becoming more about data than just information. But we’re certainly in a time right now on this timeline where most people simply put value on information. But I think that’s something that we could have done back in the 20th century, in the beginning of the 21st century.

I think now, more than ever, it’s important not to get lost and not to drown in this incredible amount of information out there, because information now is widely available. It’s widely available for free. Anyone with a smartphone and access to the internet can get pretty much any piece of information about anything they want at the moment’s notice, as if they’re willing to Google it or search for it in ChatGPT.

There are now books written on pretty much every subject, pretty much every possible and impossible problem, literally in every niche, literally in every area of interest. So shortage of information is no longer a problem. There used to be a time back in the day where information was the privilege of the rich. That’s actually not the case anymore. Information is widely available to everybody, no matter what class you’re in.

Now, but information alone is just not enough, and it’s something that has proved to be true for me many, many times over in all the years that I’ve been doing online marketing, both in my own business and working with people, because many, many times I’ve had knowledgeable students who probably knew more than I did about pretty much anything.

But for some reason, I had results, and they didn’t, and it didn’t come down to them having the information, although they were still searching for information mistakenly. They were still thinking that it’s about getting the right information, getting the missing information, or otherwise having some unfair advantage in the form of more information. Now that’s certainly not the case.

I think the 80-20 principle is going to force us, and those of us who are willing to adopt it in our lives, it’s going to force us to strip down the unnecessary noise. This is what I like about 80-20, because everything else makes me feel like it’s overwhelming.

If I’m reading a book or watching a documentary or even attending a mastermind or watching a webinar, more information feels like stuffing more information in my brain these days is just hard. It makes my head hurt sometimes. I also found myself a couple of years ago going on an information detox and not consuming much information, not reading very many books or watching very many webinars or documentaries, because I felt like it wasn’t enough.

I already had all the information I needed, at least at that point in time. At that point, it became so useful and so productive to start removing parts. 80-20 is really about that. 80-20 is not about doing more, it’s not about knowing more or accumulating more knowledge or hoarding more information or hoarding more stuff or hoarding more of anything.

It’s actually about removing a lot of that. It’s about removing and simplifying, but at the same time, by doing so, improving your results and multiplying everything you’ve got going on.

It’s just such a beautiful art. I think anyone who learns how to apply the 80-20 rule in their life ends up being a much happier individual, but also a wealthy individual and a much more well-rounded and secure individual, as opposed to somebody who just hustles all year round, year after year, and then at 50 or 60 years old, finds themselves having to hustle.

At the end of the day, I really hope that you’re working towards an outcome where you do not have to be actively hustling all the time. For instance, I was spending Christmas at this house party this year, and there was this guy, he owns a pretty successful boat repair company. He makes pretty good money, he wears Burberry t-shirts, and I’m sure he’s doing really well, but at 57 years old, he still has to wake up at five in the morning, drive three hours to his office, micromanage all of his staff and projects and whatnot, and then drive around 8 p.m., drive three more hours to go home to come to an empty home, where a tiny little dog is waiting for him.

To me, while I’m sure he’s got money, I don’t think that’s success.

I don’t think that’s 80-20, necessarily. I think if he adopted the 80-20 rule into his business, he would have been able to free himself up from that and pursue other things, or maybe even retire at this point.

The info overload is certainly a theme, I think, for the last five years. Ten years, maybe, maybe even 15, depending, because it’s just, the noise is incredible. The speed with which the information and content is being created is freaking unreal.

There used to be a buffer between something happening and people creating memes about it and creating social media content about it. These days, though, it feels simultaneous. It almost feels like that Black Mirror episode, where you get to see it on TV as soon as it’s happening.

Whoever saw that episode in the last Black Mirror season, where they were filming TV shows based on a real person’s life as it was happening, it’s kind of crazy. It’s crazy.
